Internet marketing for e-commerce – the delivery problem
Posted by admin on July, 27th 2011Having an e-commerce store means that unless you have a physical shop, it is inevitable that you will have to post your goods out to customers. Deliveries are a huge source of disputes between customers and online businesses, all you need to do is look at reviews on ebay or Amazon to see this is a subject that riles all internet shoppers at one stage or another.
Another aspect of the delivery problem for online retailers is that delivery costs are a huge consideration to internet shoppers. As they are usually a cost that is hidden until the checkout stage , it means it is harder for shoppers to determine which retailers offer the best value for money on any product.
How does this impact on your internet marketing activities? Unfavourable feedback about quality of service is always disappointing but social media and review websites means that this feedback can impact upon more than just your ego as other people can be influenced by what they read on the internet.
If your mail service provider isn’t delivering when they say they will and customers are unable to get hold of anybody at their depot then customers will be understandably frustrated that they can’t use their great new stuff that they have purchased from you.
The key thing to remember is that you should always listen to your customers and if you are getting lots of bad feedback, it is likely that there is a proportion of customers who aren’t telling you about their bad experience. You can help this by making delivery costs transparent; it is easy to advise on product pages how much you charge for delivery and the benefits of shopping with you e.g. same day dispatch etc.
A final word on the subject of deliveries, online shops rely on their reputation and if the company you are using as a courier is letting you down, it might be time to let them go.
