Linkedin – Professional Social Networking

linked in logo Linkedin – Professional Social NetworkingSo you have your Facebook, your Twitter, Myspace and Bebo social networking profiles. They all detail your life and interactions with friends for the last few years but you have left university, got a haircut and a job, how do you use social networks to help you advance your business or your career?

Here are a few facts about Linkedin:

- Founded in 2002
- There are more that 90 million members in more than 200 countries
- 5 million members are in the UK alone
- Linkedin have about 1,000 employees across the world as of the start of 2011

Linkedin gives you the opportunity to connect with people you have met in a professional setting you could say it’s one of many Internet Marketing tools available for free online. You can introduce yourself to other people who are connected to your connections (note: not ‘friends’) and you can get involved in group discussions, set up company pages and post job vacancies. It is a great tool for eager networkers, recruiters and journalists alike.

So how can you make the best use of Linkedin?

1) It helps by having a searchable profile! If you are in contact with journalists and you know that from time to time that your opinion is sought for a feature then Linkedin profiles often rank very well in Google for your own name as a search term. Try it and see. Without having to give your personal contact details away, you are opening a channel of communication for journalists and other business contact alike.
2) Get recommended. Ask colleagues very nicely to sing your praises and don’t forget to return the favour. It really helps business contacts get a better idea of what you’re about and what you are like to work with.
3) If you use Twitter you can pair it with your Linkedin account. However, if not all tweets are relevant, you can change the settings so that only tweeted tagged ‘#in’ show up on your Linkedin profile.
4) Get in touch with old contacts, don’t be afraid to use it to say hello and catch up even if you aren’t looking to work with them on a project right now. It’s great for keeping business relationships alive and you at the forefront of people’s minds.
5) You can introduce yourself to people who you do not know directly through contacts of your own.
