Reasons not to hire a PR Agency

There is a lot of emphasis right now about what public relations, marketing, SEO and social networking can all do for businesses, whether they operate online, offline or both. When times are hard, it is sensible to consider the value of all of your PR and marketing and see not only where savings can be made, but how you can get the most from the talented people you work with.

As a PR and internet marketing agency, JPR Marketing believes that when working with clients, it is our responsibility to manage their expectations by being honest and realistic from the outset about what we can achieve for them.

As with anything in business, particularly when it comes to communications, there are good reasons for going in any given direction and bad reasons too. Take on a PR or marketing company for the wrong reasons and you risk wasting huge sums of money with little to show for it. When looking to hire a PR agency, you need to be clear about why you are looking to enlist services as this will enable you to be clear about what you need to accomplish… so we have put together what we think are four bad reasons to hire a PR agency.

1. You don’t want to pay very much at all– when it comes to tendering for business services it is never advisable to just go for the company that pitches with the lowest prices. The chances are that you will be ending up dealing with junior members of the team who aren’t given the training or the support to provide the service you are paying for. You’ll probably spend half of your life chasing your over-worked account manager for ideas so in the long run it pays to think past the £ signs.

2. Do you want to delegate public relations activities to an agency so you spend less time on PR? If you are looking to hire a PR agency to take public relations off of your shoulders then think again. A good agency will need to work with you to generate stories to release to journalists and you will need to meet regularly to discuss opportunities.

3. Are you looking to become a media darling? As lovely as it is to become a local celebrity, it shouldn’t be your main objective for hiring a PR agency as they will need you to help create newsworthy material. If you want to become well-known as a personality locally (or nationally) it might be a better idea to hire an agent.

4. Are you looking to hire an agency who will guarantee placement in local, national or international media? No one can honestly guarantee coverage so don’t fall for this line. The only way you can ever guarantee getting your name in the media is to pay for advertising space.

And a good reason to hire a PR agency? If you are looking for increased visibility on and offline, improved sales brand awareness and reputation management then you’re in the right place. Contact David Wiltshire on 0845 544 1766.
