Are You Your Own Worst Enemy On Twitter?
Posted by admin on October, 18th 2011Going about your day to day business on Twitter, it is normal to encounter several Twitter users in one day. Some of the users will be seasoned pros whereas others will be newbies testing out the water. Whether you are a pro or a newbie to internet marketing and social media, we have put together five key points that could put people off following you on Twitter. Read on to see if you are you own worst enemy on Twitter.
1. Scheduled tweets – we don’t think there is anything wrong with scheduled tweets per se, but we do think that other users should know that you have scheduled a tweet. You could mark them with [ST] at the start or the end seeing as you only have 140 characters per tweet. The reason we suggest noting scheduled tweets is so other Twitter users don’t think you’re ignoring them if they try and talk to you about the subject you’ve just tweeted about.
2. Constant tweets – there is (almost!) nothing more annoying than logging into Twitter to see one user has filled up your timeline with their tweets. If there are lots of things you want to tweet about then spread them out through scheduling your tweets throughout the day using software like Tweetdeck or Hootsuite… just note point one above.
3. Spam – Unfortunately, while there are methods of communication, there are people who will try to use it to sell you something you don’t want. Spammers will always find a number of ways to get their messages out, whether it is sending you messages morning, noon and night or getting you to click a dodgy link so you accidentally spam your friends. Think about how your account appears to others and avoid looking like a spammer by tweeting descriptions with links and not sending the same tweet out hundreds of times to lots of people.
4. Ridiculous re-tweeting – it should go without saying, but don’t re-tweet an article without reading it first. In re-tweeting anything you are essentially giving your stamp of approval. Some people assume just because someone they like or respect has tweeted something with an interesting title then it must be legit and this isn’t always the case.
5. Being anti-social – if you’re not feeling chatty then you don’t have to talk to anyone. However, social media is all about engagement and building relationships so to NEVER talk to anyone seems counter-productive. The people who do the best out of using Twitter are not people who just broadcast, it’s the people who have two-way conversations. Twitter is a great way to get free feedback from your customers about your products or services so don’t underestimate the power of conversation.
